Porchview Garden

Enjoying Flowers from Above

This client’s home features a long covered porch with comfortable outdoor seating, where she likes to sit with friends and family. The space below and in front of the porch was previously planted with boxwoods, many of which had become diseased. Her request was to replace the boxwoods with something more colorful. This first year planting incorporates a mix of annuals and perennials, with a longer term outlook to have mostly perennials.

Starting a New Garden

The first step in this garden was to remove all the old diseased boxwoods. Then in preparation for the new plants, many bags of compost and manure were rototilled into the soil.

Initial Planting

We decided to limit the color palette to pinks and yellows, so there was a big impact in a fairly small space. Pink Coneflowers and Yellow Daisies, along with Pink Hydrangeas were planted closest to the porch, with pink and yellow annuals lining the front of the space.

Mid-Summer Growth

The Lantana, Bidens, and Gomphrena all grew very quickly, enjoying the amended soil and the cool morning sun of this east facing garden space.
